Blog question #10 Has this experience been a rewarding one for you? why or why not? How has the reality of your internship matched or contrasted with your expectation? What is the most important learning you did during your internship?
I’m so glad i got this opportunity to be involved with this program because I’ve learned so much with my work and who i am as a person. It has been such an amazing experience working with the people i worked with or people I’ve meet through out the whole thing. It has been rewarding to me because i honestly was scared that i wasn’t good enough to fit the role as making my own movies, but i think i’m ready. I’m excited for the future. i expected this internship just to be something i can learn from but not actually learn hands on, like being on set and working with a camera. I never thought i would be doing the things i do now for the internship. Like we got to go to the Nature and science museum to interact with other youth and teach them how to put on a quick 5 minute show. We got to make a quick short film and then know we are making our film for our live show about police accountability.
The most important learning i have done in this internship was just learning about myself more on how i work and how i like my work to be done. I’ve never really had experience with working with a crew and on set so i really had nothing to go off of, that’s why i was scared to make my own films later in life or be a director. I’ve learned to take risk and be true to myself because when it comes to my art i want it to be important and something that i would look back on in 50 years and be proud of. A film that people will look back on in 50 years and say that was a fantastic film.
Blog question #9 What have you seen or experienced in your internship that has inspired you the most on your own artistic journey? Has this experience changed your artistic ambition? How?
My experience is just being there everyday because i learn something new everyday. I get to hang out and make a film that is really important to me with people who have the same passion. There is a new experiences everyday and i appreciate those. I learned how to be a director in the beginning and now i’m learning how to be an editor. Working with my team has been an experience in its self and they have inspired me to keep on the path of adding social justice into my films. They have also inspired me to do a lot more with my films and my work. Like experiencing different opinions on an issue. Also like being a director and a editor, maybe a producer.
These experience has helped changed my artistic ambition by setting me up and leading me in the way i would like to be when i do film later on in the future. I would love to do films that are made up and have a story to it with made up characters but i would also love to do films that mean something to me and makes a different. I want to make powerful films that will change at least a couple peoples minds in life. It inspired me to reach out my comfort zone as made up stories and talk about real life issues. Maybe a film that is made up but the story line has real life issues.
Blog question #8 how is your internship project going? Describe the progress of your project. How did the conversation about your project go with your sponsor? ( If you haven’t discussed the project with your sponsor yet, how do you plan to do so?) Did they have good insight into how to improve or expand the project? How does your project bridge what you do at your internship and what you like to create for yourself? Has your relationship with your sponsor evolved as you have engaged in a creative dialogue about your project? Art there any challenges you are experiencing planning or doing your project?
My internship project is going really good. I have been on the editing stage for our film and it’s coming together really nice. Our youth team went out and got interviews about different people’s opinion on police brutality and just their opinion about a cop in whole. But before we went out to get interviews, we had to research about the topic and make the question. The team got the interviews from a random selection of people on different streets like the 16th street mall. Me and a couple people stood behind to start the editing process of the film. We are in the editing stage now. We have talked as a whole group with my sponsor, me and the youth group. We talked about all the plans and we organized what the plan of the film is. We sat and made a plan together as a group. We all came invite different ideas to improve the project.
The internship teaches different topics about social justice while doing film. It has taught me what I want to create as my topics in film. I would love to do a film with social justice projects. My sponsor is really cool and some staff that work there are really cool. The people that I’ve met so far. It got to the point were we just have conversations about different stuff instead of just work. I consider them as my friends. They are really dope people. There was some challenges so far, nothing major but just little things with the editing. But so far it’s been a great experience and I’ve been having so much fun with everybody and the project. I’ve been really excited for the film to be in the last stages because i cant wait tell its finished. i’m really proud of how its coming out so far. My team is awesome and i’m glad i get to work with them on making this amazing film.
Blog question #7 What is the difference between working on personal art project and working in a creative business? what have you learned about working in a creative business?
When you work on a personal art project, you are in charge of everything. You control what and how your project is going to go and be. You are the boss of it all so that means everything you think of goes in. In a Creative business you are working in a group. You work with others so that means that you have to take in everybody ideas and make a plan to fit everybody. When you work with a group there is a lot of different people with a lot of different experiences and opinions. Everybody has a different way of doing stuff. So that means you will be working with ways that maybe you are not familiar with. Different ways and also different views. Say you are doing a video about the book ” The Outsiders” People look at that book in so many different ways. If a 100 people are reading that same book, they are all reading 100 different books because what they get back from that book are all different in so many ways. Everybody will bring something different to the table.
I’ve learned to take in everybody different ideas and make it in to one, so we can all bring in our different creativity into the project. To use everybody’s different ideas for the end of our art work. I’ve also learned that Every idea i have may not be in the end project because everybody has so many ideas that all are not going to make the cut.
Blog question #6 how do people at work treat you? How does it make you feel? If you have in intern one day will you treat them the same? What have you learned so far from your co-workers and sponsors?
People at my internship treat me good. I feel like I am apart of something being there. From the adults to the youth, everybody treats me as apart of the group. You know when you go to a new group, you expect them to kinda shy away from the new person but they didn’t. We all include each other in everything. The adults treat me like i am a partner on a project, they trust me when it comes to my opinion on stuff. Even though I just got to the group. As for the youth we have had a couple conversations and we all talk and Leave no one out. Last time I was at the youth group we talk as a group about old TV shows that we used to watch. Being there honestly is a lot of fun. It makes me feel great that a group of youths can come together and show off what they can do by making a film with a very big topic.
If I had an intern one day I will treat them as if they are a part of the group since day one. Trust them in their opinions because maybe they might have some really great knowledge in their mind. So yes I would treat them the same. You got to trust people when it comes to this type of work because it will get you somewhere. So many people with so many experiences. Everybody lives a different life so that means so many different opinions and knowledge. If you go watch a movie in the theaters, there will be 30 different people there and each of them will get something different out of it. They will be watching 30 different movies. I have learned some basics on the cameras. Also the process of making a film and the research behind it. I’m glad I’m apart of this experience. Its been a great adventure so far. Can’t wait for the final outcome.
Blog question #5 How do you feel like your internship is going so far? What are the highlights and the “lowlights”? Do you feel like you are making connections with your co-workers? What can you do to improve your experience?
I feel like my internship is going great so far. I’m having a great time. Being on set and coming up with video ideas. It makes me more excited to be a director and screenwriter. I love the whole process of making a film and that’s what we are doing. My highlights are that I’m on a set everyday we are there and we are getting all the experience in to how to make a film. We are making a film right now and its honestly so fun. Also another highlight is just the people I get to work with. They are so funny. This week we did background research for our project and it seems boring to just go on a computer and research stuff and get facts, but it actually wasn’t boring. If you have a purpose of what you are researching, it gets interesting. I honestly can’t think of no lowlights.
I feel like I am making connections with my co- workers. All of us have so much in common and we have a good time together. Some of us want to be directors and screenwriter, we have people who love the editing part of a film. We have people who love animation. So we all love different parts of film but we all love film. That’s what makes it great because we bring something new each time. This week some of us stood a little bit after and we all just talked. It was fun because we didn’t really talk about film, we were just getting to know each other. It wasn’t awkward or anything. We were telling each other story’s and just laughing. My experience is pretty great already so I don’t know what I can do improve it.
Blog question #4 Freestyle blog week. Write your own blog prompt about your internship, then answer it in 250 words or more.
This week in my internship we did a show and we talked about police brutality, which is our topic for our last project for the internship. We had a lady who I forgot her name but she was a super dope person. But she came in and talked to us about social media. The language of social media and I learned so much from just the hour or two that we were all there talking about this topic. She showed us some magazine covers and what it compares to. It was so crazy when you see the reality. She showed us videos and we just talked. I was sitting there and just so surprised how smart the 8th graders were. Like I wish i was that smart in 8th grade. They are all smart and powerful youth. I’m glad to join the team.
When we made our first film together, I had a blast because the actors were so funny. They improved their lines. It was so funny. Everybody behind the cameras tried so hard not to laugh but we ended up laughing any ways. Its only my 4th week and I’ve had a blast every time being there. I look forward to going every week and just learning new things. Plus everybody who worked there was super nice and I’m glad I get to be apart of this ten. This was my 4th week of my bbta internship doing film.
Blog Question #3 How do your actions affect your workplace? Do you contribute positively? How do your co-workers actions affect your internship? Which co-workers are you connecting with?
Your actions always affect your work place. If you go in upset your actions will show and you won’t have a great time. People will not like that and maybe not want to work with you again. If you go in to work and you are happy and determined people will see that and would want to work with you. I always go in to the work place with an open mind and ready to experice different opportunities. I’m always ready to learn new things. That’s good because I can work with a lot of different people and their different ways of doing stuff. I think I contribute positively because when we have to come up with different ideas for a video or something, I try to always listen and take in everybody’s ideas.
Co-workers actions affect my internship because if they come in with great ideas and are positive I will be more determine and positive. If there is great vibes, then those great vibes will spread around and we can have a positive work day. It all matters if everybody works together and is positive. I am connecting with all my co-workers. They are all very smart and we all bring something to the table when we work. There is youth younger and older then me and I’m very happy to team up with these people. They all want to be different things in the film area of jobs and I think that’s cool because we all have different knowledge of film and we all bring our knowledge to make videos.
g Question #2 –What was the best thing that happened this week at your internship? How did it make you feel? What else makes you excited about your internship?
This week at my internship we got to write our first script and start recording what we wrote. The youth group put all there heads together and came up with a really funny script. We only wrote the outline of the film. The actors who played the characters improvised there lines. It was cool to see what lines the actors brought up while we were filming. I got to be the director so I learned what directors say on set. Like places everyone and quiet on set, then say roll camera and wait tell the people who are controlling the camera say rolling, and then say action. It was awesome how we only started an idea of a film with one line and came up with a great short film. It was funny and we got some great bloopers. It made me feel amazing because we all worked like a team and our ideas bounced off of each other. We worked well together. We listened to each others ideas.
I’m excited for future projects with the team. To learn more about what its like being on set and getting used to the cameras. Excited for our final project that we have to work on. Just getting to know the team and learn from everybody. Excited to take my knowledge to my future job. It was a great week and I’m excited for all the other weeks coming soon.
Blog Question #1- What did you learn from your first week at your internship? Did anything surprise you? Who did you meet and what do they do? Did you engage in any code switching?
The first week I went they were doing a live show and I got put on camera duty. I got to control camera 2. I learned how to control and move the camera. Zoom in and out. I also learned how to focus people in the different camera so you can get all angles. Even though the live show didn’t happen that day because there was some difficulties. I learned not every show is going to go smooth on set. It was first day being on any set and one thing that surprised me was seeing how the whole crew of people just brought there knowledge and came together. Its cool to see everyone even some of us who berly got there show off there skills with there assigned jobs. From being the director, to the camera person, to the sound people.
I met some other teenagers at the youth group who also was interested in film. I met our youth group leader and she was cool. I can’t remember anybody’s names but everybody was amazing. Its cool to see kids my age doing what a lot of people would consider a adult job. We are all learning. And grasping for knowledge. Also when it comes to code switching, yes I did have to engage with that. I had to be professional but also be myself. Present myself well. If I wouldn’t use the words in front of my grandma then I wouldn’t want to use the words in front of my boss. I still talked like myself just more professional. That was my first week at Denver open media.
