- Yes, this whole internship experience has been so rewarding! I got to see what it’s like to do inventory and work the square. I also got to see what it’s like to work with various designers. It was amazing to see the in’s and out’s of running a business, Desiree has taught so much that will one day help me in the future. I’m blessed to have an internship at a young age! This experience has been nothing but fun and educational, Desiree is such a cool and kickback person which just made this time enjoyable. She was a great sponsor. In reality, my internship has semi-matched my expectations I was looking for. I mean that as I got to see the other side of fashion design and that’s marketing. The Denver Fashion Truck, And my sponsor Desiree has showed me so much about how to market your own clothing and just how to get the word out there about your line. It was everything and more that I wanted to get out of this internship. The most important that I have learned during this internship is mostly how to be yourself with your designs. Everybody is always going to have something to say but theres always that other group of people that are going to love what you do, and that who’s worth designing for. The second most important thing I’ve learned is how to count inventory and how to do it right, the simple way. I’m glad I got to share this experience with a good supporting sponsor.
- From my internship at the Denver Fashion Truck, I have gained so much inspiration to further my education in the fashion design business and start my ow company. I have seen how much effort goes into running multiple locations. I’ve seen how creative you can get working in a field that you love. I experienced how it would be like if one day I had an intern and how I would treat them. I also experienced the flow of working out of a truck or bus instead of a boutique, which was really unique in many ways. Personally I think that is a lot of work, working in 3 different types of locations so when I start my own business I’m going to keep it boutique-style with only my clothing but have multiple locations. Seeing how creative you can get with your logo gives me various ideas about mines! Experiencing how to work the square and doing inventory, re-stocking and tagging I feel like I’m getting the hang of it. experience here at the DFT has completely changed my fashion ambitions! I seenMy what I want in life and I’m willing to work hard to get there, I’m going to go to CCD for a while than transfer to my dream school – FIDM in LA, California! I can’t wait for my dreams to come true. I realized that it may not be easy to become a well-known fashion designer in California but it’s everything I’ve ever dreamed about and I’m going to do whatever it takes to get there and stay there. I want my label to be seen and for my label to leave a mark in the fashion world!
Blog 8 – How is your internship project going ? Describe the process of your project. How did the conversation about your project go with your sponsor ? Did they have good insights into how to improve or expand the project ? How does your project bridge what you like to create for yourself ? Has your relationship with your sponsor evolved as you have engaged in a creative dialogue about your project ? Are there any challenges you are experiencing planning or doing your project ?
- My internship is going so well ! We got 5 weeks left I feel like it went so fast. So, I am a good half of the way done with creating my dress which will also be shown walking down the runway for CEC’s fashion show – May 12th. It’s coming together perfectly after making many alterations. The conversation about my project with my sponsor also went well I kinda already knew what I wanted to do. Desiree gave me good ideas and insights on how to design my dress, she will also be attending the fashion show. My project bridges to what I like to create for myself because since I’m a fashion major making clothes is something that I love to do, I love the idea of creating clothing thats mine that has my name on it. It plays into the concept into the local fashion designers that the Denver Fashion Truck sells, unique colorado made clothing. The relationship between me and Desiree has grew so much ! We have alot fun while working. It’s cool to get to talk about fashion and what Desiree’s likes and dislikes are like when we had to decide on what I’m going to make for the project. Through out the process of my project there was a few challenges. For one since I can’t sew at the shop I had to do that at CEC, that was a big problem because I really wanted Desiree to see the whole process. I also had fitting issues so I had to keep re-fixing it. But other than that I can’t wait till I get to shoe everybody my design !
Blog 7 – What is the difference between working on personal art projects and working in a creative business ? What have you learned about working in a creative business ? |
I think the difference between working on personal projects and business projects is that with one you have no limits per say but the other you have to follow pro-call. When working or designing with a personal art project it speaks who you are. Whether it’s designing clothes, painting, or photo gallery you can get very creative and it doesn’t get boring since it’s something that you love. When working in a creative business I mean you could have them creative aspects of it but your not representing yourself your representing someone else or someones company. So you have to be professional. What I have learned about working in a creative business is a lot of work! Like with the DFT since there are 3 different locations, me and Desiree are constantly re-stocking and tagging new products. Also I learned you can get creative with how you represent your logo. You got to do your own marketing like planning events, going to events, commercials, signs, and billboards ex. I learned that being in a creative environment you can have fun but also be professional. Then you got your slow days and great days, but everyday it’s a different experience. Working with Desiree, she has taught me so much in working in a creative field and working in multiple shops. But I think working on a personal art project wouldn’t be possible if there wasn’t a creative business. I can’t wait till I get to be known in the creative business for my fashion designing! The Denver Fashion Truck has taught me so much and I feel it gave me a jump start on starting my own company.
Blog #6- How do people at your work treat you? How does it make you feel? if you have in intern one day will you treat them the same? What have you learned so far from your co-workers and sponsor?
Desiree, treats me with respect and puts out nothing but positive vibes all the time. I feel when you go to work or an internship or even school, if everybody has a good-positive attitude it just makes everything a lot funner! If I had an intern one day, I would want them to learn and ask questions from what I’m doing. I would treat them respectful, and try to have fun during busy days so it’s not so stressful. Form a personal connection, maybe buy them lunch once in a while. As an intern you just want to learn as much as you can in the field you will be working in one day. For me its fashion design! What I have learned so far from my sponsor is to have fun with marketing your product and logo. To always be yourself when your designing and what your designing. She taught me good people skills, give the customer a variety of options (sizes, colors) and make sure everything is always re-stocked. The over all experience has taught me so much in owning my own business! It’s also taught me how fun “work” can be when you work beside someone who is always positive. Interning at the Denver Fashion Truck has been a great experience! halfway through this internship, I feel a lot of time has past by already. I got caught up on m hours I feel good where I’m at. I should definitely have enough hours by May 12th. But even though were halfway done I still feel I have a lot to learn from Desiree! Excited. Excited.
Blog 5: How do you feel like your internship is going so far? What are the highlights and the lowlights? Do you feel like you are making connections with your co-workers? What can you do to improve your experience?
- I feel like i am learning so much from Desiree, here at the DFT. Nothing but good vibes. So far, we started my sponsor inspired project and I hope I finish it on time ! I feel like so much time has passed by already, working with the Denver Fashion Truck. Since were collaborating on this dress I get a chance to see Desiree’s personal views and styles on fashion. Lastly, I feel that I am so lucky to be able to intern here and learn the in’s and out’s of owning my own business. I guess some of the highlights would be getting to meet some of the artists that drop by, learning how to market your product & logo and also working together on this dress. Some lowlights are mostly the basic stuff dusting/cleaning, watering the plants and waiting for Desiree to respond to all her emails. But with any job your going to have your up’s and down’s. The only person i work with is Desiree but I feel like were making good connections and just putting out good vibes towards each other. Although I got to meet Adrian and he seems pretty nice too ! To improve my experience at DFT, one of these days I would like to work with Desiree on either the bus or truck on the weekends. I think that would really be exciting to experience ! Other than that my internship has been great so far and were almost halfway done. Looking forward to really getting into my dress and working on the truck. Hope I finish on time !
Blog #4- What has been the most exciting thing thats happened so far and why ? What are looking forward to ? What was something new you learned ? Do you feel like your learning what you came here to learn ?
- The most exciting thing so far at the DFT, is when I get to interact with the various local designers and artists that drop by with some of their new products. It’s cool to meet the people who produce the things that you like. Once we start on our sponsor inspired projects that will be the most exciting! To get to create a dress and work on it with my sponsor will be fun and i the process learn how to collaborate on designs. So i’m looking forward to ton continue to work with Desiree in the shop and start our project. One of these days i would love to travel with Desiree on the truck or bus! Something new I’ve learned is what websites you can use to create your logo on stamps, shopping bags, business cards or boxes. Also I’ve learned about how you can design your own textiles on fabric , which is something I’m also interested in. becoming a textile designer and fashion designer. I want to be able to create my patterns on the fabric and then make clothes out of my own fabric! I feel like since I started this internship I have connected well with my sponsor and for the most part I’ve learned some basic in’s and out’s of owning your own businesses. i’m really learning a lot about marketing, it will help me in the long run when I study fashion design at CSU! Everyday I walk into my internship I’m glad and proud of where I have gotten to and where I’m going. i think the Denver Fashion Truck was a good choice for me.
Blog #3- How do your actions affect your work place ? Do you contribute positively ? How do your co-workers actions affect your internship ? Which co-workers are you connecting with ?
• Your actions affect the work place by either bring a positive or negative environment around you. No matter what your doing, you should always be happy and grateful for what your sponsors are going out of their way to contribute to you. Being in a professional place you should be respectful and understanding, with that it should create a fun and playful environment! I think I contribute very positively, i’m always axious to learn something new and see what were doing that week. Even working at an actual job their expectations are for you to be the best person you can be and always try your best. Smiling, makes the customers feel like their environment is a positive one and they’ll want to come back. I contribute as much as I can, from being on time to finishing my home work that my sponsor gives me. My co-workers actions affect my internship by also making the most comfortable and playful but serious work place! Well so far I only have worked with Desiree but I feel like we are really starting to connect. Were starting to really get to know eachother, Desiree has been sewing for about 10 years and I have only been sewing for about 2 years. She still has alot to teach me. From marketing to designing! Overall, this week has been the best so far! I started working with the square (register), learned about line sheets, and the difference between whole sale & consignment. Hopefully in the up coming weeks I can work the register by myself when Desiree checks and replys to her emails.
Blog #2: What was the best thing that happened this week at your internship? How did it make you feel? What else makes you excited about your internship? |
• So the best thing that has happened this week is, I’m starting to work more in the shop with my sponsor and interact with the various number of artists and designers. That come by the store to drop off their products. I’m starting to learn more and more each day like how Desiree operates her boutique. From how she tags and price everything to counting inventory. For example, this week the guy that finds all of the vintage clothing came by and dropped off some sweaters and flannels. After we steamed them we determined which ones stay in the shop and which ones go on the truck! Also the lady that makes DFT special candles stopped by to re-stock some of her candles, she seemed chill and layed back. It makes me feel important when i’m introduced to other people as a fashion designer! It’s amazing when artists appreciate other artists work. I also feel like i’m getting so much in sight into running my own business. It makes me excited to know that as the days go on I get to do a personal project with my sponsor. We recently talked about designing a dress! Hopefully when its finished I can wear it for my moms wedding. I’m also excited to start getting into different projects and helping with planning events. Each day we do something different, it’s not like it gets boring because there’s always something to do. I’m always looking forward to whats coming next! Week by week it gets more interesting!
Blog 1- What did you learn from your first week at your internship ? Did anything surprise you ? Who did you meet and what do they do ?Did you engage in any code switching ? |
My passion for fashion, as an up-coming fashion designer has lead me here to my first week of interning ( Tues &; Wed ) at the Denver Fashion Truck. It is a shop that is both a home base and traveling boutique for DFT. It has local art, fashion, vintage handmade and up cycled lifestyle. Beginning my journey off, I learned how to re-stock inventory, stamp shopping bags & create hang tags and labels. also how to steam handpicked vintage clothing, put price tags on items and learn why they are priced to how much it is and how to do basic duties done everyday such as light cleaning and dusting. I’m starting to learn behind the scenes to running my own shop. I was surprised at how much labor goes into collaborating with over 40 designers. Keeping up with new products coming in and out,how many items they sell and doing that in 3 different locations is crazy ! This first week, I met Desiree ( my sponsor and owner of DFT ). Along with owning her various shops, she makes pillows that she sells in her shop. i also met a couple of local artists that sell their product out of he shop. Desiree is so chill and layed back for a professional setting I didn’t really need to do any code switching. My first week has taught me so much ! I can’t wait to see what comes from this up-coming semester ! By next week I hope to accomplish helping my sponsor with more challenging projects and working with her more in the shop. The dreams of owning my own boutiques one day seems so reachable, starting from the bottom and working my way up to the top !
